Notation
Scientific notation:
A number is said to be expressed in scientific notation if the number is between 1 - 10 and multiplied by 10 to a power
Tip:
The amount of digits to the right of the decimal point is equivelent to the power, or the value of the power is the amount of places the decimal point moves to the right
E.G.
( 5.8 × 107 ) Here there will be 7 digits to the right of the decimal, the 8 is one, now fill in the rest with zeros: 58,000,000 The decimal moves 7 places to the right
0.75 × 102 = 75 Decimal moves 2 places to the right
Examples:
1.3986 × 107 = 13,986,000
1.343 × 103 = 1343
For negatives:
The amount of zeros is equivelent to the exponent
E.G.
( 5.3 × 10-1 ) Here the exponent is −1, so there is one zero: 0.53
( 7.5 × 10-3 ) Here the exponent is −3, so there is 3 zeros: 0.0075
Example:
4 × 10-6 = 0.000004
Engineering notation:
A number is said to be expressed in engineering notation if the number is between 1 - 1000 and multiplied by 10 to a power which is a multiple of 3
