If asked to work out the solutions in degrees to something like: [ cos x = 0.5 ], the first thing to do is sketch a graph of the function.
Once the graph is drawn, mark out from 1 to -1 on the y-axis, and then from 0° to 360° on the x-axis (assuming you are asked for the solutions within the range of degrees).
Then take the inverse function of the value (in this case 0.5), which will give you the first solution in degrees.
You can then use the symmetry of the graph to aid you in finding the second solution.
