Inspiration 4
2021-09-19
The historic crewed all civilian spaceflight of inspiration 4 lifted off successfully on 16 September 2021, at 00:02:56 UTC The mission was delivered by SpaceX and the Dragon spacecraft with the docking port having been replaced by a large cupola viewing window. The entire launch was streamed live from the launch pad all the way up to orbit at an incredible altitude of 585 km (364 mi), farther from the earth than any human since the crew of apollo who landed on the moon. Pre-launch was full of weeks of anticipation as the 4 member crew (Hayley Arceneaux, Christopher Sembroski, Sian Proctor, and Isaacman) prepared for their once in a lifetime journey to space, undergoing physical tests, training and engaging with the public as they passed each exciting step on the road to lift off. The crew remained in orbit of the earth for 3 days performing tests and communicating with the earth and most importantly, enjoying the experience and the incredible view of the planet earth, viewing the day and night sides of the planet as they orbited at 17,000 miles per hour. This amazing flight came to an end with a successful re-entry of the dragon capsule on 18 September 2021, at 23:06:49 UTC, it splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean and was picked up by a recovery ship roughly forty minutes afterward. The entire re-entry and splashdown was also streamed live right up until the crew exited the space craft, and what a wonderful era of space travel it is where we can all bare witness to such incredible events as they are happening, and cheers to SpaceX and the crew of inspiration4 on a fantastic mission to space opening the door to space travel for more people on the planet and for raising funds for St. Judes childrens research hospital in the process.
