Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are compounds containing carbon and hydrogen atoms only.
Alkanes
Alkanes are a family of hydrocarbons the smallest of which is methane CH4. Each successive member combines more and more carbon and hydrogen atoms.
After methane, the next members of the series are ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), Butane (C4H10) etc.
Chemical formula: CnH2n + 2
Alkenes
Alkenes are another family of hydrocarbons containing compounds such as: ethene (C2H4), propane (C3H6), Butene (C4H8) etc.
Chemical formula: CnH2n
