States Of Matter
Matter exists in four fundamental states or phases: gas, liquid, solid and plasma.
- In a gas, the molecules have sufficient kinetic energy so that the influence of intermolecular forces is negligible. The average distance between adjacent molecules is much greater than the size of the molecule.
- In a liquid, the molecules have sufficient energy to move relative to each other; their structure is mobile, but their volume is constant.
- In a solid, the molecules are tightly bound together in a structure. The arrangement can be crystalline or amorphous.
- Plasmas are electrically conductive gases, with positively charged nuclei moving in a‘sea’ of disassociated electrons.
A phase transition occurs when a material changes state.
